With the unfortunate lack of snow in the Albany area the past few years, to the point where the course has literally been completely barren, we anticipate that in 2025 we will be replacing this event with a less formal get together that is scheduled in coordination with an actual snowfall. Full details TBD late 2024.
Trail shoes are recommended (instead of road shoes). Expect some parts to be muddy but otherwise the footing will be similar to how you'd experience the terrain in the spring.
Since its creation in 2005, the Brave the Blizzard 5K Snowshoe Race offers participants a low key and fun opportunity to try out snowshoeing. Whether you're experienced in snowshoes or this is your very first time, we welcome you to join us! Rentals are available for $5.
Note: In the absence of snow, the event is held as a trail run.

Enjoy the festive atmosphere with music playing, Frosty the Snowman cheering for you, and post race refreshments. It is otherwise a low-key event. There is not a physical item giveaway. Baked goods are given to the Top 3 Male and Female finishers but there are no age group awards.

Brave the Blizzard was created in 2005 by the Albany Running Exchange.
Prior to 2016, it was primarily a 5K, although some years it was 3.5M or 4M.
From 2016 through 2018, a 5.5M was also held.
Most of the last few years have either been without snow or with a relatively minimal amount of snow/crusty top layer.
