This page currently reflects the 2024 event. It will be updated for 2025 in mid-winter.
The idea for the Dodge the Deer 5K and Kids Races came into being when two members of the (then brand new) ARE went for a run in the woods in the fall of 2002.
They knew they wanted to put on a 5k trail race but didn't know what to call it.
At the very moment they were about to begin the arduous task of brainstorming, a deer jumped out in front of them,
and Chris yelled to Josh, "Dodge the Deer!"
Fast forward to now, and we welcome you to join us for the 22nd Annual! As always, the event offers a gorgeous course that is mostly flat and welcoming for all! Have kids? We've got them covered too with our Bully the Bear 200 Meter Sprint and our Chase the Chipmunk 1 Mile. After the event, enjoy the music, food, and all-around fun atmosphere!

An awesome post-race BBQ in a beautiful place! And don't forget to bring the kids and have them take on the kids races as well as get to hang out with our cast of characters. Above all else, expect great energy and a fun loving atmosphere produced by your friends at the Albany Running Exchange! There's also an optional merchandise item (socks, as detailed below) that is an optional add-on.
If you ran with us in our early years, you may remember these highly visible socks with a bright yellow cuff. We're bringing them back in 2024! For those who want to commemorate their participation (or simply want a sweet pair of running socks at a great deal), these can be added to your registration for $12.
In 2004, Dodge the Deer met Chase the Chipmunk, and they fell in love and got married at this race. Bully the Bear tried to stop it, but, alas, his antics were no match for the power of their love. (See the pics here.)
In the years since, to playfully commemorative the hilarity of having held a wedding for a deer and a chipmunk, we've crowned a 'Mr. & Mrs. Dodge' couples division winner. Dodge and Chase are always on hand to place the winning antlers upon the heads of the winning couple.
So if your significant other is also running, team up and enter the competition! It's simple, just list the name of that special person when you register (and have them do the same for you) and the lowest combined time wins the ever coveted Ceremonial Antlers! It makes no difference what gender you both are, nor the officially 'recognized status' of your relationship, - just that you are in a committed relationship with one another.
While you may have them on-site at the event, you are not permitted to participate with pets or strollers.
Be part of the team that brings Dodge the Deer to life!
Dodge the Deer was first held in 2003 and staged from Rensselaer Lake Park through 2005. It was moved to Schodack Island State Park in 2006. In 2020, it was held at Normanskill Meadows Farm. In 2021, it was held at Thacher State Park. In 2022, it returned to Schodack Island State Park.
